Artist Statement

I have always been interested in what happens in the water surrounding us and what underwater organisms experience. Humans have a large impact on the health and safety of sea creatures. For my concentration I chose to create a series of sculptures representing individual organisms and how pollution has affected, changed or destroyed each underwater creature.

The majority of these pieces are table pieces, not too large in size, unlike the impact pollution has on sea creatures. Each piece depicts a different form of pollution that will cause the viewer to think more about human impact on the environment and the ocean itself. An octopus with wire as tentacles is telling the viewer that tentacles get stuck in wire that has been dropped in the ocean. A half healthy, half harmed oyster shows the effect of elevated carbon dioxide in the ocean water. Coral that is degraded shows the effect of sewage outflows through the different sizes of the repeated circles. Another coral with a white emphasized blotch illustrates the bleaching of coral reefs and how it kills homes for the creatures. An asymmetrical starfish with only three legs and a white blotch is made to show the impact of chemical being thrown into the ocean which makes their appendages fall off. A symmetrical fish with fragments of plastic bag stuck in its gills to help the image of fish getting stuck in plastic bags and not being able to make it out. A sea turtle with water bottle caps as a balanced shell shows how turtles ingest a lot of plastic throughout their lives. Lastly, an asymmetrical whale tail depicts the act of whales getting caught in fishing nets.
